Fabricated manifolds are extremely touchy and won't run for shit if you miss by the slightest amount, either in the plenum or runners.

I'm not trying to be an ass, just some facts for you to digest. Even if it's for a street motor that just has to sound good, your welds better be top notch, or it'll crack right away with the weight of the carburetor s and vibration from engine and driving. Well just my 2 cents. By jwright Date I too will agree with buying an aftermarket if you can't calculate and control the volume to match in each runner. If you get unequal runner sizes and velocities that thing will be junk and won't run. You'll never get the carb tuned if that thing isn't right. I'm sure someone could suggest a type of material and filler for that application if you still want to give it a try. John Wright. If not then you really should look at a fabricator with experience in manifold design particularly if it is for a normally aspirated engine. I have worked on inlet manifolds but only on cars with forced induction where flow rates aren't as critical and in manifold design I always defer to those more knowledgable than myself.

I've seen some beautifully made drag race manifolds but I wouldn't even attempt trying to make them as I'm not an expert in that field. If your engine is a 4 cylinder with carbs or injection hanging off the side then the inherent vibration problems will quickly show up design problems.

I give you a quick example of just how little things make a big difference. We do some work on a racing Dodge Viper V10 and the owner sent the throttle bodies away and had a lip removed from the front of the throttle bodies to effectively remove what they thought was an air restriction.

They had them air flow tested before and after and they certainly gained extra air flow but when they put them back on, the car wouldn't idle properly no matter what they did. The lip they had removed was there to slow the air when the butterflies were closed to allow good idle properties. Everything they did was good in theory and the air flow tests confirmed this but in practice it failed.

The best advice would be to seek out the experts and talk with them of your requirements.

With several atmospheres of pressure in the manifold, it seems like those fittings threaded into the thin plastic would come shooting out like a bullet the first time the engine sees boost. I have watched it expand on the dyno as we hit north of 30PSI and it never gave up any of its nipples. Beyond the sketchy fittings, the manifold design is really not great for a boosted engine. The plenum has no baffling so only the middle two runners have a clear shot at the throttle body and to get to the others, the air has to do a hard Not a huge deal when the engine is drawing the air, but not so much when the air is being crammed in at high pressure and velocity.

Or so I felt. Again, in practice, it really seemed to work fine, probably because the intake was quickly pressurized so the delay in filling the outer runners was negligible.

Next was the size of the throttle body. The TB itself is small, so even modified the largest aftermarket option I had seen was about 2. The general geometry of the manifold is also not ideal for a high-performance application, as the plenum is small and the runners are very long, both things conducive to low-end torque but not so well suited for high RPM jam.

I had seen some aftermarket aluminum options, with a wide price range. All of these had drawbacks in my mind.

Over the past few years, I had taken up TIG welding and had become quite proficient, including with sticking aluminum. Then one day while discussing Pure Performance Factory cams with a friend and cruising their website, I came across their fabrication components section and they made a CNC head flange and trumpets.

It was scary to consider, but at this point, I knew that this had to happen.The magic sauce has long been the intake manifold, where the air is distributed — often not perfectly — from a common plenum to individual runners in the cylinder heads. A multitude of hours are spent in design work, planning out the perfect runner setup, before a block of aluminum is selected to machine. This set of CNC milled runners seems to be coming out nicely.

In many ways, the tools and materials today allow top intake designers to make curves, bends, and profiles that were either very difficult, or in some cases, impossible with raw flat sheetmetal.

It works great for many racing applications and street applications, but is limited for high-end racing applications. This was the standard bearer in racing manifolds for many years. These can be highly effective and in many racing applications are both more cost effective and as equally effective as full billet intakes.
